School was purchased to be used as their den.
Money was raised in various ways and donations received from individu- als which enabled the Club to assist other organizations and contribute to worthy causes. A priority was to give assistance to the blind. Engraved plaques were given to new residents in the area. Members donated labor to the Community Sports Centre and provided Christmas gifts for needy children in the area. They donated blood at the Blood Donor Clinics. They formed a hockey team coached by Lion Roy Oatway with Lion Burton Burleigh assistant coach.
A Lioness group was formed in 1985.The Lions Club was dissolved a few years later. The Lioness club continues to meet and each year they pro- duce a Community calendar that shows birthdays, wedding anniversaries and In Memoriams.
AUTOMOTIVE
Erwin Dennis started a business in Ellerslie called Dennis Garage about 1949, repairing cars and selling Esso gasoline. He expanded his business and sold and serviced Chrysler cars. In 1972 the name of the business was changed to Dennis Motors. They constructed a new building with a large showroom and service bays. The original building was then used as an auto body repair shop.
Erwin and his family obtained a Skoda dealership in the early 1980’s, sell— ing Skoda cars, Yamaha snowmobiles, motor-boats, all-terrain vehicles and used cars. There were then four full service bay areas and two licensed mechanics. Repairs of all types continue to be done and Ultramar gasoline products are sold. Brian Dennis and Betty (nee Dennis) Smith, son and daughter of Erwin and his wife Olive (nee Millar) Dennis carry on the business.
In the summer of 1962, brothers Wendell and Harold Phillips had a serv— ice station constructed in Tyne Valley. Beecher MacDougall was Foreman and Clifford Morrison and Waldo MacDougall did the carpentry. Albert Sharpe did the masonry work. The Phillips’s first sold White Rose gaso- line but later changed to sell Shell gasoline and products. They also sold used cars from their service station in Tyne Valley. In the fall of 1968, they sold that property to Lorne Millar and established a new garage and car
